Florida...Under the terms of the Florida Armed Occupation Act approved August 4, 1842, as amended, men able to bear arms were entitled to aplply for 160 acres of land in certain unsettled areas of east Florida and given patents tpo the land upon fulfilling the condition of five years' settlement. A permit to settle shows the name of the applicant, his marital status, the month and year he became a resident of Fl. And a description of the land in terms of subdivision, section, township and range. AlgernonS. Speer received permit number 159. Holms receiving a liberal education for the purpose of preparing him for law profession. Codicil signed in presence of John Matthews, Joseph Patton, B.J.H. Gaines. Codicil not dated.

Thursday, March 16 edition of The Autauga Citizen newspaper, from an editorial, "Florida Lemons: We see it stated that Dr. Speer of Melonville, Florida has raised 20,000 lemons from 250 trees. He is said to be the largest lemon grower in the country."

September 10th issue of same newspaper..."Married...on the evening of the 4th inst. At the residence of Powell Jones by the Reverend Pleasant Spear, Mr. FrancisM. Smart of Pike Co. to MatildaC. Jones (Matilda Smart) of Montgomery Co., Al."

October 1st issue of Independet American newspaper...."Murder....A most brutal, cold blooded murder was perpetrated on one Nathan Spear of Coffee on Thursday night last. Spear was a witness against some rowdys at court and we learn they made threats against him, provided he should testify to certain things against them, to the effect that he should not go home a living man. Be this, however, as it may, poor Spear did not live to see the rising Sun on Friday, after testifying on Thursday, Spear was found about half a mile out of town (Elba) next morning on the road leading to his home. The supposed mjurderers have been arrested and have found winter quarters in our jail. Coffee jail being insufficient to hold them." In the April 8, 1857 issue of the same newspaper, "Two men were sent to the penitentiary for life, Hillery Silivent and Hyman Silivent (father and son) convicted of being accessories to the murder of Nathan Spear. Several others were indicted for the same offense (names not given)."

John Spear was born Feb. 12, 1831 at Anderson, S.C.. On July 22, 1861 he enlisted at McMinnville, Tnj. As a private in Company A, Ninth Tenn. Inf. And served throughout the war. He came to Jasper about 1877 and at various times was a cattle dealer, a merchant and marshal of Jasper. His wife, Ardena Spear was born in 1833 and died Dec. 17, 1908. A son, Richard moved to West Virginia and one daughter married W.R. Richardson. From Census of Conf. Soldiers, 1907 Mountain Eagle, Dec. 26, 1917 & gravestones.
